Dragon's Cup Caribbean - Submission Fighting (Grappling) Rules and Regulations

Please review the following rules and regulations.

Divisions

  • Juniors
  • Beginners
  • Advanced

To compete in the Advanced Division, athlethes must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Has placed first or second at a Dragon's Cup Event or any other grappling event locally or internationally.
  • Has competed in MMA.
  • Holds the rank of Blue belt and above in Brazilian Jujitsu.
  • Holds the rank of Brown belt and above in Judo.


Juniors Division

Brackets

  • 7 and under
  • 8-12

Competitor Wear/Attire

  • Slim fit style cotton tee shirt with non-offensive logos are allowed.
  • No armless tops or vests are allowed.
  • MMA pants,surf trunks,sports pants and gi pants are accepted
  • Any pants deemed to be "too short "must be worn with a tights underneath.
  • No tights only, or shorts that have zippers, or any attachment or embellishment that can cause unnecessary damage to either competitor is allowed.
  • If a competitor's fight wear or gear is deemed to be unacceptable by officials, the fighter will be afforded the opportunity to change their attire.

Health and Hygiene

  • Fighters with long nails, open cuts, sores, nail fungus, visible rashes or ring worm, will not be able to compete.
  • Hair styles that are open are not allowed.
  • Fighters with runny nose or flu-like symtoms will not be able to compete.

Rules and Guidelines

  • Mat referee reserves the right to award a match if a submission is deemed absolute, without a tap indicated. This is to preserve the safety of junior athlethes.
  • Once a junior grappler is deemed to be in a position that might cause harm to themselves, the referee along with officials can, or may, step take in to stop the match and award the victory to the other competitor. This rule is absolute.
  • If a junior grappler is injured during the match, the referee/officials will not allow the match to continue.
  • Junior division matches are 3 minutes.
  • On the day of the event coaches will be further briefed on the rules or changes of rules.
  • Matches can be stopped by referees, medics or corner (throw in towel).
  • For infractions, a warning followed by a penalty point to the other competitor will be issued.

Permitted and Prohibited Techniques

Submissions:

  • No toe holds or heel hooks.
  • No body compression or spinal locks.
  • At the junior and beginner levels athlete safety is paramount, and while these submissions may result in a quick tap, an incorrect action by the defending competitor can result in serious injury.
  • Further, a fully torqued or extended limb will be called by the referee. No official is to allow an athlete to be injured due to being stubborn.

Take-downs:

  • Head spikes and overhead slams are prohibited at all levels.
  • No leg scissor take-downs are allowed at the junior and beginner levels.
  • Note: In the junior division there is a natural tendency to hug and pull on the necks, including where kids use the scarf hold position. Referees will examine the competitors to ensure that no neck cranking is occurring.


Beginners Division

  • 125-135
  • 136-150
  • 151-170
  • 171-190
  • 191+ (Heavyweight)

Match Conducting Referees:

All queries are to be addressed to the referee Jason Sieunarine (Enso).
Referee's decisions are final.
Zero-tolerance for referee disrespect - this includes by competitors, coaches and/or parents.

Weigh-Ins:

Weigh-ins commence strictly at 8:00 am and bracketing at 9:00 am.
Fights may begin as early as 9:30 am.
If a competitor's name is called three times and they are not present at the mats, they will be skipped.
